Rebecca Jewell lives in Mawgan on the beautiful lizard peninsula. She paints contemporary botanical pieces in acrylic.

“I’m lucky enough to combine my two passions gardening and painting, the joy of planting a seed and watching it grow into a beautiful flower is pure joy, and being there to witness the whole process from birth, to when they shout out their full beauty. The excitement when spring arrives and you see the new green shoots popping up from the ground and the anticipation of what might come. Every flower tells a story and I love to capture the curl of a delicate petal or the light reflecting off a waxy leaf”

“I photograph all the flowers I use in my work and love to incorporate light and shade. Being very photorealistic is something I do to capture a beautiful moment and when people say they can reach in and touch or even smell the delicate fragrance that’s a real compliment”

Rebecca often paints large canvases to make a real impact, using dark background as this makes the flowers really sing, or white very pale backgrounds to give a real sense of light and space, like a breath of fresh air or a cool scented breeze on a hot summers day.
